Faith House
713-876-7533
Dedicated to caring for those in need of a warm, clean, secure place
to rest from the stresses of dealing with debilitating, painful and
life-threatening illnesses.
Faith House was established to provide inexpensive housing in a
supportive Christian environment for patients from all over the world
coming to Houston-area hospitals for treatment. |
Visiting Faith?

The idea of an apartment ministry for out of town/country patients
and their caregivers came from what we called "A Night with the
Pastor."

Pastor Paul Schairer was newly called to the
congregation. In trying to learn what direction the congregation
needed to be led, he set up evening sessions of groups of 20-30
members. He asked individuals "If money was no object, what would
you like to see happen at Faith Lutheran Church in the next 5 to 10
years?"
|
|
|
One of the top ideas that came
from those "nights" was to build or find a place to provide
inexpensive housing for patients who came to Houston for long-term
medical care. |
|
|
That dream came true in 1986. Through a
generous $10,000 gift from an anonymous donor, it was decided that
the church parsonage would be remodeled to house two families. It
was divided so that each apartment had two bedrooms, a bath and a
living area. The two apartments shared the kitchen, breakfast and
large den and laundry areas of the old house. The first and second
residents were Phyllis Theile and Kathy Shelton. It is in their
honor that the two single apartments bear their names today.
|
|
|
When the residents shared part of the living
quarters, they became a comfort for each other and a support group
for others who joined them. It was also realized that the waiting
list was long and there was a real need for more apartments. The
church raised money to purchase another home adjacent to the church
parking lot. It was remodeled to include two private bedrooms with a
private bath and shared kitchen breakfast and laundry facilities. |
|
|
Later it was decided that the first Faith
House in the church parsonage needed to be torn down, because a new
Family Life Center was necessary for large congregation functions.
In 1990, money was raised to build this facility. At the back of the
Faith Center there would be two private two-bedroom wheelchair
accessible apartments, each with their own living, kitchen and
breakfast areas, as well as a small landscaped patio. |
|
|
Of all the dreams of the congregation
that came to fruition, The Faith House Ministry has always ranked as
the "best" decision and ministry that the congregation had ever
undertaken. |
|
|
Faith House is a self-sustaining,
non-profit organization. It provides a clean, comfortable place for
patients to stay at $12 per night. Because of many wonderful
donations through memorial gifts and private contributions, we were
able to establish a scholarship fund. If a patient is not
financially able to pay the nightly fee, we draw from this
scholarship fund and place these monies in the operating fund in
order to pay for the upkeep and daily operational expenses of Faith
House. |
|
|
It is through the Grace and help of God that this ministry has grown
and served so many wonderful people. As it has been a blessing to
the many guests that have stayed there, it has been an even greater
blessing to our congregation at Faith Lutheran Church to have the
opportunity to minister to those in need. |
